Rev Briget kicks off the press conference
Two dozen clergypeople, representing eight Christian denominations and Reformed Judaism, gathered on May 17 in the Rincon Congregational Church (UCC) sanctuary to stand together and face the media with a compassionate faith response, on the day the "Protect Marriage Arizona Coalition" launched its petition drive to pass the anti-domestic-partnership amendment in the name of Christianity.
Rev. Briget was the first speaker. She and others stressed how their faith impels them to stand up for the marginalized couples - same-sex or not - whose basic rights are endangered by the amendment. First UCC members Rev. Virginia Bergfalk and Rev. Susan Morgan joined the assembled clergy. At least five other First members were in the audience of about a hundred.
The press conference was organized by the Arizona Coalition for Fairness's Faith committee, headed by Rev. Briget. For more information on the Coalition and the statewide battle against the amendment, see http://www.aztogether.org/.
